Three Wheeled Buggies
Whether you're looking for a buggy run around in or a nifty stroller to tackle the neighborhood, three-wheeled buggies provide great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to manoeuvre, even in tight spaces.
For an easy ride, opt for a pram with air-filled tyres and look for models with 360deg front swivel wheels. They are prone, however to punctures. Make sure you have a repair set.
Sturdy frame
The latest figures have been released revealing that the three-wheeled buggy which was a symbol of the decade of more money than wisdom - is in steep decline. Four-wheelers have replaced them, which are more versatile and easy to drive, while also looking fashionable.
The principle is that the larger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to deal with bumpy and rough pavements. Having larger wheels both front and back also makes it much easier to maneuver and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy on a newborn baby and a toddler and found it to be extremely sturdy. It handled cobbles, grass, and rough pavements, as well as dirt tracks and kerbs. She noted that it was sturdy to push, and extremely solid on rough terrain. Its tyres, which are inflatable and need to be pumped up regularly they have suspension built-in. This was extremely comfortable for my kids.
The shape and size of the seat is a further factor to consider. You will want it to be large enough to accommodate your child's comfort. You will also require it to recline to allow them to lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies have the option of lying flat that lets your child face you, while other buggies only permit a parent-facing option.
The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road and walking in muddy areas. This buggy is ideal for a single child starting from birth and can be modified to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for infants and toddlers from birth until age 4 and includes a bumper, raincover, an improved 5-point harness, and a big padded seat. Storage options are also a plus with a large basket with zip pockets on the hood, and an attractive pouch on the rear of the seat unit.
Larger wheels
Larger wheels will give your buggy more stability when driving over rough terrain. This is especially beneficial for buggies designed for off-road use. They also allow you to maneuver the buggy through tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have the front wheels that swivel to aid you in maneuvering around tight corners, while others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability at the speed at which they can be pushed. This can also help if you bump into a tree root or stray kerb as the front 3 wheel strollers will lift up slightly to prevent you from hitting it.
Many 3 wheel pushchair wheel pushchairs feature air filled tyres which means they can handle many different terrains and are more flexible than four wheelers. They are also lighter. However, they are prone to punctures and you'll need to keep an repair kit, spare tube and pump in your bag.
Our top three-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both buggies feature larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on gravel tracks, grass and market town cobbles" and are able to effortlessly climb and descend kerbs. The buggies also come with suspension that Kath says "smooths out bumps extremely effectively".
The drawback of having larger wheels is that they can make some buggies quite broad and may struggle to squeeze through narrow spaces. This can be a problem if you use it for jogging, or need to fit through doorways that are narrow while on the move. The majority of models come with small folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels and store them more compactly.
Easy to Manoeuvre
A three-wheeler can be more maneuverable for children. The way in which they are built ensures that the front wheels turn at a quick pace and are really easy to maneuver and are ideal for difficult terrains such as parks, cobbles or bumpy pavements, as well as dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried an all-wheeler with her toddler, and she wrote: "The Terrain is a joy to maneuver on rough terrain. The swivel wheel in the front was especially helpful." I was also amazed by how well it handled kerbs when using the hand-operated break. I found it extremely stable when driving downhill or on uneven ground."
The only downside of this incredible maneuverability is that the three wheel buggy's bigger wheels sometimes mean that it will struggle in tight spaces - something to be aware of if you live in a metropolitan area. If this is an issue then a four-wheeled buggy might be a better option for you.
