Item upgrading allows players to boost the gear score of an item to 700 and add a final perk. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory and heading to the kiln.

Certain items are worth upgrading because of their unique stats. (For example an excellently rolled breakpoint armor used in melee PvP). Other items such as weapons don't change much after an upgrade, and aren't worth the effort.

Weapons

Upgrades to weapons can boost their numerical stats, including attack damage, crit chance, and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons have a flat-rate bonus that increases damage per second. Additionally there are many weapons with an added bonus that is activated when three or more of the same weapon are present on a unit. The number of stones required to upgrade the weapon will continue to increase until it is required to use a higher tier of Smithing Stones, at which point it will reset to one.

Upgrades to weapons can also alter the stats of their base. This is usually a good factor, but it could also have negative effects. For items that are only used in a certain build (Whistant's shield for FB sorcs, for instance) upgrading them could make them unusable unless you get a lucky roll.

Armor items can also be upgraded to improve their performance. This can increase the defense base of a helm or chest as well as belts and gloves. These can boost their strength and agility. Armor also offers an option to reroll its Enhanced Defense%, meaning that it may reroll to a lower value.

The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats it will gain when upgrading, along with the relative value of those stats. Armor

Making a few improvements to your armor can make huge differences in your ability to endure. Certain sets offer massive increases in poison or curse, fire, and magic resistance, making the journey through difficult terrain a breeze. You can upgrade your armor by visiting any of the Great Fairy Fountains. Be aware that armor can't be upgraded in the same way as weapons, so you'll have to concentrate on upgrading it for physical power if you're Warrior or Spell Power in the case of a Mage. It is also recommended to save your armor upgrades to upgrade the armor that you'll still be wearing at the end of the story, like the Ring of Lightning, Spectral Shield or the mask you'll wear in the final boss fight, the Monter Parts Merchant Mask.

You can also unlock some benefits to your armor by giving the jeweler in Gerudo Town 10 Twinkling Titanite.
